Temple University Japan:
Misunderstanding Talk: Discourse Approaches to Problematic Interaction
Date: Sunday, May 18th, 2003 Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Speaker: Gabriele Kasper, University of Hawaii
Description:
Misunderstanding is not the doubtful privilege of nonnative speakers but a regular occurrence in interactions between competent interlocutors. Nevertheless, more limited access to communicative resources and sociocultural knowledge makes interaction more vulnerable to various kinds of trouble. This seminar by Dr. Gabriele Kasper
explores different types of misunderstanding from a variety of theoretical perspectives and discusses several research approaches that have been proven useful in the study of problematic talk.
