Iwate-Aomori JALT:
Teaching Culture Through Children's Literature
Date: Sunday, June 24th, 2001 Time: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Speaker: Susan Unher, Morioka University
Description:
Children's stories act as the stepping-stones into the realm of more sophisticated works to follow. Native speakers have this foundation of simplified but important humor, philosophy, and values of their society. The nonnative speaker lacks this advantage, making it more difficult to jump into the world of adult literature of a foreign culture. There are many examples of culture the presenter hopes to share through the use of children's literature.
