Macmillian LanguageHouse:
Corpus Data in the Classroom
Date: Wednesday, October 8th, 2003 Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Speaker: Gwyneth Fox, Birmingham University
Description:
We've now been using corpus data for linguistic and lexicographic research for a quarter of a century or more. Findings from the research are slowly finding their way into the language classroom, mainly in the form of dictionaries and grammars; but raw data are still relatively rarely used, although almost everyone who does use them reports increased language awareness among their students. In this workshop I shall mention some of the corpus work that has been done in the classroom, will give examples of my own use of data with students at different levels of language proficiency, and will give workshop participants data to analyse themselves. This Macmillan LanguageHouse event is co-sponsored by British Council. Gwyneth Fox, Birmingham University (UK) is also a dictionary publisher for Macmillan.
