Katoh Gakuen:

Putting it All Together: Best Practices in Immersion, EFL and Early English Education (day 1 of 2)

Date: Friday, December 3rd, 2004 Time: 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Speaker: Kensaku Yoshida, Myriam Met, Roy Lyster, Setsuko Toyama, Keiko Abe-Ford, Marc Helgesen, and more

Description:
The symposium integrates three themes: 1) Immersion & Content-based EFL Instruction; 2) Early English Language Education; 3) English Educational Reform in Japan (K-College). This is a two-day event but participants may chose to attend either or both days. Although the symposium has a very strong emphasis on early English education, practicing teachers and researchers from pre-school through college are welcome.

The first day (Friday, Dec. 3) is primarily devoted to class observations of the highly successful English Immersion Program at Katoh Gakuen. Observations include kindergarten - high school classes. The day concludes with a panel discussion between the symposium participates and the students and parents enrolled in the immersion program. For those staying overnight there is a reception and events planned for the evening.

The second day (Saturday, Dec. 4) consists of several plenary talks on early English education, immersion & content-based foreign language teaching, and factors necessary for successful language classes in a Japanese context during the morning session. The afternoon will include follow-up workshops on these topics and a number of "break-out" sessions that focus on one of the three themes of the symposium. The day will finish with a panel discussion with some of the key presenters at the symposium addressing each of the symposium themes.

Simultaneous translation (Japanese & English) will be provided for most of the plenary speeches, and the final panel discussion on Saturday. Some of the workshops will be conducted in English and some in Japanese. Contact one of the numbers below to receive a free brochure or go to our home page for more information and register on-line.
