Researching Second Language Classrooms

Please note: Starting from Spring Semester of 2005 (January 10, 2005) TUJ-Osaka will operate at a new location in central Osaka. The new TUJ-Osaka will be accessible directly from Umeda Station.

The purpose of this seminar is to introduce novice researchers to research methods that can be used to investigate L2 teaching and learning. The seminar will begin with a general introduction to major research purposes and types, with special emphasis on the differences between quantitative and qualitative research. Because the seminar will focus specifically on small-scale classroom research, most of the seminar will deal with qualitative research methods.

The first part of the seminar will introduce methods that can be used to study the attitudes, thoughts, and behavior of L2 teachers and learners, namely, action research, survey research, verbal reports, diary studies, and case studies. For each method, we will examine its primary characteristics, discuss typical procedures used for understanding such research, and evaluate a study using this methodology. Participants will also practice analyzing and coding data from such studies.

The second part of the seminar will introduce three methods commonly used to investigate classroom discourse, specifically, interaction analysis, discourse analysis, and text analysis. Again we will examine the essential features and common procedures of each method and evaluate studies using this method. Participants will then be asked to analyze data generated from such studies. The closing part of the seminar will offer suggestions for writing up classroom research projects. We will examine well-written classroom research reports in order to develop criteria for writing effective research reports.

This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public. To attend both days of the weekend seminar costs 11,000 yen for the general public (free for M.Ed. and Ed.D. alumni of Temple University Japan). Please see the TUJ Osaka web site for full details.
