Speaker: Mayumi Tabuchi; Lesley Ito

Description:
The Longman Team invites you to participate in their nationwide initiative to promote successful early reading in Japan. From introducing first readers to designing your own Graded Reading Program, join the Longman Summer Skills Tour 2005 for directions to The Road To Reading.

10:00 - 11:00 Big Ideas for Little Readers. Many of our students know how to read in English, but do they like it enough to do it often? Are we teaching our children how to read, but missing the chance to teach them to want to read? If so, we are creating school time readers instead of lifetime readers. Our primary goal as teachers is certainly to develop our students' English skills. However, as teachers of children, it is fundamental that we also promote a positive attitude towards reading and create enthusiasm among children for books. With activities specifically suited to large and small classes, join the fun and you'll get to take home a wealth of big ideas for your little readers.

11:15 - 12:45 The Road To Reading. This presentation takes a practical look at getting your students started on the reading road - no matter how young they are. Highlighting a number of considerations teachers should address when selecting stories, the presenter will show how to carefully evaluate the potential of each story for different groups of learners. Using specific examples and demonstrations, the presenter will propose a methodology which offers a gradual progression from general understanding of the story to tasks which consolidate, extend and personalize the language and content presented throughout a story. Further to this, the presenter will focus on a range of storytelling techniques, which have been specifically designed to maintain the listener's interest and attention. Get and keep your students on The Road To Reading by sharing the secrets for successful shared reading.
