Description:
The Teachers College, Columbia University campus in Tokyo is pleased to offer The Intensive Program for Integrated English Teaching Skills for Teachers of Children, a 2-day workshop from August 21st-22nd (the fee includes both days). This program aims to provide a short specialized period of study for teachers who work with children, and it is organized to assist teachers in exploring practical English teaching ideas about what to teach and how to teach in children‚s classrooms. Participants will finish the program with a range of teaching ideas they can experiment with immediately in their classrooms.

8/21 (10:30-1:00 pm) - John Wiltshier
It was fun! So what? A critical analysis of the role of fun in Children's ELT and the introduction of alternative motivational strategies and successful activities.

8/21 (2:00-4:30 pm) - Michele Milner
Interactive Storytelling using Multiple Intelligences: Participants will explore drama and movement techniques to make storytelling an interactive process. They will also look at how Multiple Intelligences can be used to make classroom activities.

8/22 (10:30-1:00 pm) - Stan Pederson
Games as a Language Learning Resource. Participants will explore the value of games as a language learning resource in the English classroom. They will learn how to evaluate games as well as how to develop games of their own.

8/22 (2:00-4:30 pm) - Setsuko Toyama
Songs and Chants As Teachers - Tools For Teaching Children: Participants will experience songs and chants as children and create their own songs/chants. Step-by-step guidelines will be demonstrated. Farewell party on the last day!

Instructors:
John Wiltshier, Associate Professor, Miyagi University, Sendai, received his M.A in TESOL from Manchester University, UK specializing in TEYL. John has taught for 10 years in Japan and for 6 years in primary schools in the UK. He is the founder of ETJ Sendai where he regularly runs teacher workshops.
Michele Milner, Lecturer in the graduate TESOL program at Dankook University, Seoul, received her M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. Michele taught for many years in Japan at all levels and publishes materials and gives workshops and trainings on language and peace education, the media and arts-based teaching strategies.
Stan Pederson has been teaching International Studies at public elementary schools in Chiyoda-Ku since 1993. His published materials include songs, games, chants, storybooks and plays. He is a part time lecturer at Keisen Women's University and instructs the course Teaching English to Young Learners at Kanda University of International Studies.
Setsuko Toyama, guest professor, Keiwa College, is a teacher, a teacher trainer and author of numerous EFL textbooks, including English Time series of Oxford University Press. She has conducted workshops both in Japan and overseas.
