The purpose of the seminar is to give teachers an opportunity to explore and exchange ideas about English teaching, and to encourage teachers to think critically about what they do in their classrooms. The seminar is based on the belief that an effective teacher is a reflective teacher. Critical reflection enables teachers to take the initiative and think for themselves, and to design their teaching so that it is locally suited to the learners in their own classes. Widdowson consistently defends clear-thinking and clear presentation of ideas. For international ESOL, he has probably been the most influential philosopher of the late twentieth century.
