Hokkaido JALT:
Adapting the Han Group Organization for Use in College English Classes
Date: Sunday, March 26th, 2006 Time: 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Speaker: Cindy Edwards, Hokkaido Musashi Women's Junior College
Description:
This presentation explores the group-based class management style of Japanese pre-school and elementary school teachers (Anderson 1988, Lewis 1985) and applies the concepts of peer-management, peer-cooperation, and shared responsibility to a first-year college upper-intermediate level discussion class taught by a non-Japanese English teacher. To facilitate discussion tasks, students work in a 6-member "han" led by a group leader, who summarizes the results to the whole class of 36 students, and submits a one-page report to the foreign instructor's class.
Organization: Hokkaido Chapter of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (Hokkaido JALT)
Cost: JALT Members: free
Non-members: 500 yen
Venue: Hokkai Gakuen University, Toyohira-ku, Sapporo
Location: Sapporo City, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
