Compass Publishing Japan:

What Should Every EFL Teacher Know? A morning with Paul Nation (Tokyo)

Date: Sunday, March 31st, 2013 Time: 9:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Speaker: Paul Nation

Description:
There are two presentations today:

1. What should every EFL teacher know?

This talk looks at the most important ideas that EFL teachers need to know about the teaching of English. It is built around the idea that EFL has five important jobs: (1) to plan a good course (the most important job), (2) to organize learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom, (3) to train learners in language learning strategies so that they are encouraged to be independent in their learning, (4) to test learners to make sure that they are making progress and that they know how well they are doing, and finally, the least important but still important job, (5) to teach.

2. What are the ten most effective vocabulary teaching activities?

This talk presents ten proven and very useful activities for helping learners increase their vocabulary knowledge. In addition, reasons are given why these techniques were chosen to be in the top ten. By the end of the talk, participants should know ten very useful ways to encourage the learning of vocabulary, should know why they are useful, and should have an awareness of some very important principles that should guide the learning of vocabulary.

This is an event sponsored by Compass Publishing Japan to announce the publication of a new teacher's reference book by Paul Nation titled, What Should Every EFL Teacher Know?, and to give Professor Nation the opportunity share his ideas. Englishbooks.jp is participating as well.
