Hokkaido JALT:
Using Drama in the ESL Classroom
Date: Sunday, April 22nd, 2001 Time: 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Speaker: Ohno Akihiko
Description:
Mr. Ohno is a free-lance dramatist who is involved in education and
theater. He gives workshops on how to use drama in second language
classrooms. He always starts his workshops with simple, non-verbal
warm-up games and gradually moves on to verbal games with lead-in
exercises. The underlying philosophy of the entire workshop is that
everything you do and say will be accepted.
Some activities that Mr. Ohno uses are:
- Creating a shared story-small groups make stories spontaneously.
- Making a monologue-everyone starts walking at random and start self-talking on the subject assigned by the workshop leader.
- Dialogue: After participants become comfortable with being characters, they are put into pairs and start a dialogue in a given situation.
- Dubbing- one person becomes an "actor" and does all the stage movements while his or her partner provides the voice.
