Kobe City University of Foreign Studies:

Conversation Analysis as an Approach to Second Language Acquisition: Old Wine in New Bottles?

Date: Monday, November 25th, 2002 Time: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Speaker: Gabriele Kasper, University of Hawai'i at Manoa

Description:
Since its inception, second language acquisition (SLA) has been informed by sociolinguistics. Various forms of discourse analysis have been influential in SLA for the past 20 years. More recently, SLA has seen an upsurge of qualitative approaches originating in various social sciences, one of them being Conversation Analysis (CA). The increasing variety of sociolinguistic and discourse approaches to SLA requires that SLA researchers understand the potential and limitations of such approaches for SLA. In this talk, Dr. Gabriele Kasper will discuss some of the specific contributions that CA can make to SLA and some of the problems involved in doing CA on L2 learner data. Dr. Gabriele Kasper is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
