Teaching Children How to Read English

Speaker: Joe Lauer (Hiroshima University), Adam Beck (Hiroshima Starship), Mari Tsuruda (Hiroshima YMCA), and Junko Noborizato (Noborizato's Juku)

Description:
Teaching children how to read English is a great challenge, indeed. This special meeting will feature four speakers:

1. Joe Lauer will summarize bilingualism research findings with respect to teaching native English speaking children how to read English while they attend Japanese schools.
2. Adam Beck will explain his experiences teaching English to children at Hiroshima International School, as well as the publication he recently edited, called "The ABCs of Bilingualism."
3. Marie Tsuruda will talk about the benefits of story telling and how to teach reading to non-native speakers.
4. Junko Noborizato will explain how she teaches English reading to Japanese junior and senior high school students.

Each person will speak for 20 minutes. The first three presentations will be given in English, and the last one will be given in Japanese. Importantly, there will be a 20-minute open discussion at the end.
