Iwate-Aomori JALT:
Testing - An Important Component in Language Teaching
Date: Sunday, September 21st, 2003 Time: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Speaker: Brenda Hayashi, Miyagi Gakuin Women's University
Description:
Mention the word "testing" and many people grimace and groan. It seems that testing has a bad reputation, at least in some circles. Testing does not need to be viewed as a necessary evil; rather, it is an important component in language teaching, for both teachers and students. In this session, participants will first examine sample test items and evaluate them (e.g., What is being tested? How is a student being tested? Is the test appropriate?). We will then go over kinds of tests and test-making guidelines. Finally, we will do some item-writing, creating tests for our own various teaching situations.
Brenda Hayashi works in the Dept. of Intercultural Studies at Miyagi Gakuin Women's University (Sendai, Miyagi).
