Nara JALT:
Training Students to Use Basic Learning Srategies
Date: Sunday, October 17th, 2004 Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Speaker: Clive Lovelock, Tezukayama Gakuin University
Description:
The Japanese high school Juken Eigo exam-oriented study system, based on grammar-translation and memorization, trains high school students in classroom behaviour which is antithetical to language learning, according to presenter Clive Lovelock, whose workshop demonstrates a system of using individual student assessment cards to make students aware of things they need to do to learn English. This system provides students with constant reminders to use them. Clive Lovelock is Professor of ELT at Tezukayama Gakuin University's Osaka Sayama Campus. He has a Post-graduate Diploma in TEFL from London University, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Essex University (both UK). He has taught EFL and ESL in various countries and in Japan for nearly 30 years.
