Shizuoka JALT:
A Psychodynamic Approach to Enhancing Perceived Value in the Language
Date: Sunday, January 20th, 2002 Time: 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Speaker: Paul Doyon and Brad Deacon
Description:
In this presentation, we will address a two-pronged approach -- cognitive and affective -- to shifting students' beliefs, and hence their perceptions in the language classroom. While there has been much research regarding communicative competencies, we believe that prerequisite to communicative competency is a psychodynamic competency. Students beliefs about themselves as learners, about language learning, and about learning in general, will affect how they perceive our classrooms. By using anecdotes from our own lives and classrooms, we will introduce the concept of value perception enhancement and how to turn apathy into reciprocity through the use of mediating cognitive and affective strategies.
